Comparisons between two music magazines.

  • Typically, Billboard is a magazine targeted towards older teens and young adults. This is because the images and headlines are more grown up and wouldn't appeal to a young teenager or child because of the language used. Whereas, Top of the Pops is targeted towards younger audiences such as 11-18 year olds but most ages can read them because the content is clean and accessible for any age with a clear understanding of the articles and headlines
  • The Billboard Rihanna magazine is low key and she looks very serious. This could be because to show that she knows she is important which links with the headline "The World Is Hers". This could contain a in depth article with maybe explicit features or complex words so that it fits it target audience. Whereas, the Top of the Pops Taylor Swift magazine is high key and summery, Taylor is smiling to make her appear easy going. Even though her headline is "Why i'll never figure out love!", she isn't showing the right emotion to link to it but it is portraying that young girls should enjoy life and not get caught up in 'love' problems.
  • The headline "The World Is Hers" shows power which could be the reason that Rihanna is standing over the Billboard logo because it shows her in a hierarchy to be better and more important than anything else. However, headlines are above her but all the articles are related to Rihanna so it still shows her importance.
  • The headline "Why i'll never figure out love!" is in orange because love is usually represented to be red or pink and if it is in a different colour than it is linking back to Taylor not being able to figure it out.
  • On the 'Billboard' front cover, there are only names of other celebrities mentioned and there are no little pictures included. This highlights the emphasis on Rihanna and her importance. Whereas, the 'Top of the Pops' front cover, there are other subtitles with little pictures of well known pop artists. This shows that Taylor Swift is just as important as other celebrities. This could be because it makes everyone look important and equal to the target audience so that they know not to discriminate against anyone.
  • The 'Top of the Pop' front cover includes stories such as 'Wahey! One Direction get wet and wild!", "Blimey! Justin: Haters are just confused admirers" and "Mwah! Stooshe's cringey kissing confessions!". These three article covers will attract more people to buy the magazine if they are a big fan of One Direction, Justin Bieber or Stooshe. Also, they include fashion aspects in the music magazine to encourage more sales of the magazines because girls will want to be like their celebrity idols. For example, "Summer Stunner! Beauty buys for any holiday" and "131 Celeb Style Steals". These two subtitles include alliteration to make it more catchy and will trigger you to want to read on more. Also, both subtitles are in orange, yellow or aqua blue. This is good because they are summer colours and link back to the title "Summer stunner!". There is also a competition to "Win! Lunch with the Loveable Rogues" - This will increase the sales because Loveable Rogue fans will want to have the chance to meet their favourite singers for lunch. However, the 'Billboard' magazine only includes subtitles about other music artists and their music by using puns. For example "Pitbull burns bright" and Pitbull has a song called 'Burn up the Club' so it links back to that and uses the word 'Bright' to show that he is doing well with his new song.
  • 'Top of the Pops' has 'BBC' at the top which is a well known conglomerate. This could increase the sales because it may appear to be more official. However, 'Billboard' hasn't got any conglomerate logos on their front page. This could lack on the sales because it doesn't look as well known.
