Analysis' of double page spreads in a Magazine.

The right hand side of the double page spread has an image of Justin Bieber starring directly at the camera. This shows that Justin is aiming this directly at the audience which makes the reader feel more intrigued to carry on reading because they feel like he is talking to them.
He is wearing a black vest top, red trousers and black shoes. This is good because it is using the same colours from the chosen colour scheme. This shows the consistency and effort put into the magazine to make it good and worth reading.
Justin is leaning back on the chair to show off his tattoo. This is bad because it can make him come across as big headed. However, it makes the interview look like it was very relaxed which suggests that you should be relaxed when reading it.
The picture doesn't have a lot going on and it is quite plain and simple. Although, this is expected considering it is for a young target audience and they don't want to over crowd it and confuse the reader.
There is a thumbnail picture in the middle of the article on the left hand page. This is good because it allows the reader to have a feel of the situation whilst they're reading without having to think about the scenario. Also, in the thumbnail, Justin has a red hat and black outfit which also fits in with the colour scheme. This also shows the consistency and effort.
The headline is a quote from the interview which is good because it straight away tells you what you will be reading about. The colours used in the headline are red and black. There is a mixture to make it become eye catching and stand out so that you won't flick past it and will stop to read it.
In the article, there is questions in bold and red and the responses in black. This engages the reader more because it makes them feel like they are doing the interview to Justin and they will more likely want to continue to read it.

The left hand side page is a full image of Davey Havok. Straight away this is good because it'll instantly attract his fans to stop and read that article because they like to know everything about him.
Davey's clothing matches the colour scheme due to him wearing white and black including his tattoos and the colour sheme being black and white with a hint of pink.
Davey Havok is looking straight at the camera, this gets the reader engaged with the artictle because it looks like he is looking straight at you. This also links in with the questions from his interview standing out in white which allows you to read them like you have been interviewing Davey because it gives his response and it makes you feel like you are a part of it.
The headline is a quote, this is good because it briefly tells you what the article is about before you read it for yourself.

Lady Gaga takes up the left hand side of the double page and is starring directly at the reader, this helps to engage the consumer and want to read on. She has a lack of clothing on and this makes her have a raw look about herself which emphasises what she is actually like considering she is well known for her meat outfit.
There is a big 'L' over the text on the right hand page, this is bad because it takes off the attention from the article and may make it hard to read which may irritate the reader and make them not want to read on or buy the magazine again because they find it hard to read.
There is three columns of writing that builds up one article. It isn't' spaced out and looks quite plain. This would make me not want to read it and looks quite boring in the fact that readers will probably just read the first paragraph, get bored and flick the page. However, it is appealing to the reader because if Lady Gaga is their idol then they will buy the magazine and want to read it. This is good because it will increase sales.

From looking at these three double page spreads, I have decided that I like the idea of an interview. I think that it is effective to have the artist taking up a page with his/her eyes starring directly into the camera and it allows that certain artists biggest fans to feel more engaged with their idol. Also, I like the idea of having a set colour scheme and the idea of the interview having different colours involved to set apart the questions from the responses. However, I won't do a straight article because it looks boring and unappealing. It also doesn't engage with the reader which is bad because it won't make them want to read it as much.

Analysis of Content pages.

We Love Pop - Contents Page.
The content page for We Love Pop uses a consistent colour scheme. This is vital to have because it makes it look professional, whereas if it was made up of random dark and bright colours it would look too much and take away the focus of what the page is trying to tell you.
There are a lot of pictures on the content page and they are all in a structured format to make it look professional and well edited as well as it making it easy to read what it is trying to tell you.
The contents is in a little box in the corner. I think this is bad because it has a mini article that isn't needed yet it takes up the whole space and not enough room to tell you what you may be able to read. In my own magazine, I would have the contents taking up the whole page to make it look like an actual contents page and not like somebody has just thrown whatever they wanted to on to it.
There is a consistent font used throughout the contents page which is good because it makes it look the same and won't draw more attention to one part more than the others.
The use of celebrity pictures is good  because when you read the content box, it will link to the pictures and you get a rough idea of what you will read before you do. In my own magazine, I will have at least 3 artist pictures to help sell the magazine and increase the readings.

Top of the Pops - Contents Page.
The content page for Top of the Pops is very well structured because it takes up a whole page to explain briefly what the magazine will be featuring. Whereas, the We Love Pop magazine doesn't do this. It is good to take up a whole page because it makes it look more professional and like it has had more effort put into the making of it.
The colours are consistent and high key. This is good because it shows that it is professional and welcoming. The colour pink is used to show that it is a very girl magazine. This links with the subheading used "We  Boys". This is good because it shows that if the girl who picks it up and looks at the content page, she will see that if she buys it she'll be able to read about boys and what they like. Also, there is a "Wins & Offers" sub heading, this will help to increase sales because it shows that if you buy the magazine you can enter yourself into a competition to get something nice or to get something at a better deal due to buying the magazine.
The contents page uses two artist pictures that are loved by girls. This is good because it will help to increase the sales from JLS and Justin Bieber fans because they know they'll be reading about their idols if they buy the magazine.

Q - Contents Page.
The colour scheme of Q is consistent and doesn't change, this is good because it looks well thought out and professional. The colours mainly used are White, Black and Red. This is a mixture of high key and low key which is good because it shows that the artists do different type of music within their genre with different types of emotions.
The contents page is similar to Top of the Pops, in the sense of having a whole page taken up unlike We Love Pop.
There are four pictures used which is good because it shows the consumer what they will be reading about before looking properly at the content.
At the top, it has the issue number. I think this is good if you are a reader who collects paper magazines because it allows you to know if you are up to date and order them in time. This makes it helpful and useful to the consumer.

History of a Music Magazine.

From researching MOJO's magazine history from their start date November 1993 to where it is currently at November 2013, I have realised that very little has changed. The main thing that is the same is the logo. The only difference between them is they varied between black and white. Whereas, other magazines such as 'Top of the Pops' changed their logo over time. It is clearly noticeable to see that as time went on, you can see the editors got to learn new techniques such as layering the magazines. This is due to heads being over the 'MOJO' logo.
Each magazine is about a celebrity or multiple celebrities accept for 2003 due to it being an anniversary magazine.
Another thing I have noticed is that from 2007 until now, the bottom left hand corner of the magazine features a CD. This could be their way of using a synergy because they are selling the music and the magazine at the same time to the subscriber.
The majority of the magazines (excluding 1995, 1999, 2003, 2007) are all low key lighting. This could be because it is representing the genre and it wouldn't fit and look right if the colours were bright and eye catching. The low key lighting also links to the artist's poses and facial expressions as they all look serious. The reason for the other four magazines not being low key is because of what they are trying to represent and sell to the reader. For example, 2003 is an anniversary edition so they aren't going to be dull and lifeless, they are going to show happiness and excitement through colours to express their success with their magazines.

From these magazines, I would like to use the idea of layering heads over the logo because I think it shows a hierarchy of importance without stating it. Also, I like the fish eye effect in 2001 but I wouldn't use it because I'd prefer to have a picture taking up the whole space and not having to write on a coloured background because I think it can have an unprofessional look.

Comparisons between two music magazines.

  • Typically, Billboard is a magazine targeted towards older teens and young adults. This is because the images and headlines are more grown up and wouldn't appeal to a young teenager or child because of the language used. Whereas, Top of the Pops is targeted towards younger audiences such as 11-18 year olds but most ages can read them because the content is clean and accessible for any age with a clear understanding of the articles and headlines
  • The Billboard Rihanna magazine is low key and she looks very serious. This could be because to show that she knows she is important which links with the headline "The World Is Hers". This could contain a in depth article with maybe explicit features or complex words so that it fits it target audience. Whereas, the Top of the Pops Taylor Swift magazine is high key and summery, Taylor is smiling to make her appear easy going. Even though her headline is "Why i'll never figure out love!", she isn't showing the right emotion to link to it but it is portraying that young girls should enjoy life and not get caught up in 'love' problems.
  • The headline "The World Is Hers" shows power which could be the reason that Rihanna is standing over the Billboard logo because it shows her in a hierarchy to be better and more important than anything else. However, headlines are above her but all the articles are related to Rihanna so it still shows her importance.
  • The headline "Why i'll never figure out love!" is in orange because love is usually represented to be red or pink and if it is in a different colour than it is linking back to Taylor not being able to figure it out.
  • On the 'Billboard' front cover, there are only names of other celebrities mentioned and there are no little pictures included. This highlights the emphasis on Rihanna and her importance. Whereas, the 'Top of the Pops' front cover, there are other subtitles with little pictures of well known pop artists. This shows that Taylor Swift is just as important as other celebrities. This could be because it makes everyone look important and equal to the target audience so that they know not to discriminate against anyone.
  • The 'Top of the Pop' front cover includes stories such as 'Wahey! One Direction get wet and wild!", "Blimey! Justin: Haters are just confused admirers" and "Mwah! Stooshe's cringey kissing confessions!". These three article covers will attract more people to buy the magazine if they are a big fan of One Direction, Justin Bieber or Stooshe. Also, they include fashion aspects in the music magazine to encourage more sales of the magazines because girls will want to be like their celebrity idols. For example, "Summer Stunner! Beauty buys for any holiday" and "131 Celeb Style Steals". These two subtitles include alliteration to make it more catchy and will trigger you to want to read on more. Also, both subtitles are in orange, yellow or aqua blue. This is good because they are summer colours and link back to the title "Summer stunner!". There is also a competition to "Win! Lunch with the Loveable Rogues" - This will increase the sales because Loveable Rogue fans will want to have the chance to meet their favourite singers for lunch. However, the 'Billboard' magazine only includes subtitles about other music artists and their music by using puns. For example "Pitbull burns bright" and Pitbull has a song called 'Burn up the Club' so it links back to that and uses the word 'Bright' to show that he is doing well with his new song.
  • 'Top of the Pops' has 'BBC' at the top which is a well known conglomerate. This could increase the sales because it may appear to be more official. However, 'Billboard' hasn't got any conglomerate logos on their front page. This could lack on the sales because it doesn't look as well known.

Research of a Music Magazine.

  • The position of the image is right in the centre and it over laps the magazine brand title. Which is 'fabulous' This can suggest that they think that Rihanna is really important and is more than fabulous. It foreshadows that Rihanna is going to be a main part of the magazine before you even read on.
  • Rihanna is pouting and starring directly to the camera with a bit of an attitude. This could emphasise that she knows she is important.
  • The headline "She's RED HOT" is a pun because Rihanna has bright red hair, red lips and is wearing red but it also means that she is hot in the music charts. I think that it is an effective play on words and I'd like to use a pun in my own magazine.
  • The lighting is high key to show that is welcoming to encourage you to read on. This is good because it makes her redness look better than if it was going to be in low key lighting.
  • The colours used are red white and black. The red and white are high key colours to show that it is an exciting magazine but the black is low key which is quite gloomy. However, the black writing is covered which can suggest that the magazine is good rather than bad.
  • The colour red is linked with love. This can suggest that Rihanna loves her music and the magazine.

  • The image of Katy Perry is positioned to the right of the image. This could be because it allows you to see most of her body and allows more space for you two read headlines about her.
  • Her head is over lapping the brand name 'Billboard'. Billboard is a chart of the top music. Having her head over lapping it could suggest that she is on the top of it and is over taking with her new song. Also, her body is made to look bigger than the magazine name which could show that she is exceeding in her career and is becoming the next big thing. The headline is "Inside the Court of the New Queen of Pop". This could link in with her over lapping the magazine name because it shows that she is the most important women in the industry of music.
  • High key colouring is used to make it look intriguing and the reader will want to open it and read on because it catches their eye. The colour pink is used to show passion and love. This could have been the chosen colour to show that Katy Perry loves the magazine and being in the top charts.
  • Katy Perry is used because she is a big pop icon and she has a lot of fans who would buy the Billboard magazine just due to her. If they enjoy it, it'll help boost the sales of future Billboard magazines.
  • She has flowers on her dress and is holding flowers because it makes her look natural and pretty. This is good because she looks like she is true to herself and isn't fair.

  • The image of Selena Gomez is in the centre of the magazine. This makes her centre of attention because when you look at you instantly seen her. It makes her look important.
  • Selena Gomez is smiling which makes her looks happy which is linking well with her high key clothing in a nice yellow colour which looks summery and easy going. This gives a positive feel about the magazine and Selena.
  • The colour of the aqua blue is used to make it look summery which links in with the yellow colours. These two colours contrast well together because they give a relaxed feel.
  • "Follow your dreams Fame & Fashion advice from Selena x" - The word dreams is big and blue which looks eye catching and relaxed. This is good because it portrays the message to be easy if you were to follow your dreams which will persuade readers to take Selena's advice. The use of saying 'Fame & Fashion advice' will be good for readers who are Selena fans as they will want to know that little extra about their idol and to be more like her. Selena uses an 'x' after her name, this makes her look friendly and loving to her fans. This can help to increase sales of top of the pops magazines for this episode and future episodes.
  • There are other mini images used, for example, One Direction, Fearne Cotton and Aston Merrygold and JB Gill from JLS to attract their fans aswell as Selena Gomez's fans to buy the magazine and read it.
  • The music magazine also ties in articles about holidays, fashion and gossip. This is good because it is bringing in different aspects from media into a magazine about music to attract more sellers but it also links into Selena Gomez as she is fashionable and has lots of informtation to share with the reader.
  • There are also '9 cool posters' including. This is good because it will make the younger audiences want to buy the magazine so that they can have the posters to put up in their rooms.
  • Selena is holding her curly hair and smiling. This makes her look younger which is good because most of the readers are young/teenage girls which Selena is too. This means that the readers may be able to feel like their feelings and lifestyles are like Selena's and will help them to think about things in a different light.

  • The image of Justin Bieber looks like he is walking into the scene. The background is white to make him stand out and show his importance.
  • There is a mini picture of Justin Bieber that says that there are 3 posters inside. This will attract customers because the young readers will want to have his posters.
  • The colours used are white and orange. These are high key colours so it makes the magazine seem happy and relaxed.
  • The headline is "Justin's photo diary". This will attract customers because the readers who are major fans of Justin Bieber will want to see his pictures.
  • In a circle next to the image of Justin, it says "What I Want in a Girl' - By Justin Bieber". Fans of Justin Bieber will want to buy the magazine so that they know how to turn theirselves into Justin's dream girl. In my opinion, I think that this is bad because it makes it look like Justin Bieber doesn't love his fans the way that they already are. However, it is a good way to get sales and I think that I would use something like that in my own magazine because it will attract fans to buy and read it.
  • "Inside my private world", people and fans will want to get an insight of Justin's personal life and find out something they don't know. Reality is, it will either be made up or something that they already know. Even though, it is a good way to encourage sales.

From this research of Music Magazines that already exist, I have learnt that they mostly use a big centred image of a celebrity which will boost sales. They also all use catchy headlines and something that will make a fan and a reader want to buy and find out about. In my own magazine, I would use a lot of the ideas from the four magazines I have analysed such as the high key lighting to make it look happy, inviting and relaxed. Also, the sort of headlines such as "What I want in a Girl" even though I disagree with it, it is a very good way to increase sales and views. I have also learnt that sometimes the celebrities head is over the magazine title to show their importance, like Katy Perry and Rihanna in Billboard and Fabulous.

My School Magazine - Completed.

This is my completed school magazine. I called it 'inspiration' because it is catchy and sounds motivating. I used a mix of high key colours because it makes the magazine and the school look inviting and welcoming.

I included 4 photos. 3 which were official from the school website and one that I took my self. This is so that it looks more realistic but you are also getting an honest insight of a lesson from the photo I took myself.

The headlines I used are catchy because they will appeal to students who have been involved in some of the events such as the prom and some parents depending on their child's age group.

If I was going to re do my magazine, I would make a section appealing to future students, parents and staff because it'd make them feel more welcome as when you take a first look at my magazine, you'd instantly assume it was for the parents and students.

It did go along with my plan in some aspects because I used bright colours, mentioned canteen food, exam stress and the house competition. I did mention the prom but I didn't include images on the cover like I said I would in the plan. Although, I did use students from sixth form in their lessons as well as students in lower years.

Planning of my School Magazine.
